Firefighter. Before the thoughts of becoming an fireman even entered my mind, I had always attempted to remain physically fit. Prior to Crossfit I had spent the last 14 years playing recreational basketball, softball and soccer. I worked on my benchpress and did some running.

I would get stronger, yet I could never lose the infamous "belly". I would consume myself with weeks of running. I would drop weight and the "belly" would remain. To add further fustration, I would lose signifigant strength.

Fast forward to my hire date of being hired as a fireman. I was at a firedrill that was being conducted at a 20+ story high rise buildings. A senior fireman made a statement to me that I will never forget. His words were "do not ever become so obese that I cannot carry you out of a burning building". I was a bit shocked by that statement. Upon further research I discovered that cardiac arrest is the number one killer for firefighters. At this point I really dedicated myself to staying "in-shape".

My workouts continued and I discovered Crossfit of Naperville. My first workout with Neil was unforgetable. I admitted to him that my core and legs were not my strong points, but that I was in good shape. My "belly" was still there, but I was fully confident that "Crossfit workouts" wouldn't be that challenging. Five minutes later I was gasping for air.

I've been a member at Crossfit Naperville for the last 6 1/2 months and FINALLY my belly is gone. For the first time in my life I'm starting to see my abs. I've thrown the benchpress by the wayside and dedicated myself to ONLY Crossfit workouts.

My level of fitness has been increased ten fold. My weight is down and my strength, cardio and flexibility is up. For the next 30 years, my career is to protect the citizens of my town. At a minimum, I will be doing Crossfit for the next 30 years.

Thank you Neil!
_____________________________________________________________________

Chris Ashe
My name is Chris Ashe, I’m 23 years old, I’ve been CrossFitting for the better part of 5 months, and I love CrossFit.

Crossfit for me has been the most intense and comprehensive training program I have ever participated in. I have run the gamut with regards to workout routines from the most structured and professionally run personalized program, thru my application of the Men’s health “6 minutes to perfect Abs.” While I have found some value in the above mentioned (and everything in between) I had yet to encounter a program that truly pushed me to my physical, mental (and even emotional) limits.

Enter CrossFit.

In February of 2009 when I began my CrossFit journey, I truly had no idea what to expect from the program. It was new, innovative, demanding, and a freakin’ Rush. Since then I’ve lost about 15lbs, increased my core strength exponentially, and my cardiovascular stamina is at its highest level that I can recall (and I played collegiate rugby for 4 years).

So what have I truly gained from CrossFit?

In addition to the excellent level of fitness and noticeable changes in my body shape, I’ve gained a sense of community, commitment, and competition--the likes of which I have not felt since partaking in high-level sports as a teenage and college athlete. CrossFit has provided me a forum to interact with people who share several of the same goals and attitudes both about fitness and about life. It has provided me the opportunity to re-commit to living a healthy and fit lifestyle. CrossFit has also re-ignited the flame of competition within me. While the opponents have changed to girls like “Fran”, “Helen”, “Elizabeth”, and “Annie” (excuse my language, but they’re all bitches), and of course the ever-ticking stopwatch, my drive to perform better is unwavering.

I’d recommend CrossFit to ANY breathing human-being. If you are sick of “the routine” check out CrossFit. If you have a “Chest and Tri day” check out CrossFit. If you think “doing some cardio” is 20 minutes on a treadmill or elliptical…check out CrossFit. You get the picture. As I said, I love CrossFit and will continue to train the CrossFit way for the foreseeable future.

____________________________________________________________________

How is CrossFit of Naperville different?

We are not run like the typical gym. The typical gym is a sea of machines, you are left to fend for yourself or figure out a routine that will work for you. If you do get training most of the time the typical workout consists of isolation movements and extended aerobic sessions. The fitness community from trainers to the magazines has the exercising public believing that lateral raises, curls, leg extensions, sit-ups and the like combined with 20-30 minute stints on the stationary bike or treadmill are going to lead to some kind of great fitness.

At CrossFit of Naperville we work exclusively with compound movements and shorter, high-intensity cardiovascular sessions. We vary the workouts daily. Day to day and week to week, the workouts are ever changing. We have replaced the lateral raise with push-presses, the curl with pull-ups, and the leg extension with squats. Why? Because compound and functional movements done at relatively high-intensity or anaerobic cardio is radically more effective at eliciting the desired fitness result. And variety will avoid a platue affect and keep you ready for anything.

At CrossFit of Naperville a trainer is there to work with you at all times. We do not feel that we need to hover over every movement that you make, but rather that we can guide and coach you to become more independent. You are ultimately responsible for your fitness, but the trainers and other athletes will assist you and be there to support and challenge you. No matter your fitness level, all athletes will do the same workout, provided by CrossFit of Naperville. But we will make certain that you are properly scaled to see the most benefit from these workouts. It is not commonly known, but the regular person and the elite athlete can benefit from similar workout program. It is the manner in which it is scaled that allows it to be beneficial and effective to all.

CrossFit of Naperville runs open gym style. A trainer is always available to assist members and members seldom do workouts alone. Have you ever worked out in an atmosphere in which the faster, stronger athletes finish first? Have you ever worked out in an atmosphere where that athlete then turns around and cheers everyone else until they complete the workout? We are a community of like minded people, that are interested in their own fitness as well as the fitness of others.

If you want to experience a challenging, fun fitness program with people that genuinely care about you and your fitness goal, than come an check out CrossFit of Naperville.

Contact Us

What is CrossFit?

Broad General and Inclusive Fitness (.wmv Video)...Greg Glassman, Founder of CrossFit

CrossFit is a back-to-basics strength and conditioning program. We’ve used our same routines for elderly individuals with heart disease and cage fighters one month out from televised bouts. We scale load and intensity…we don’t change programs. We constantly vary the exercises, sets, reps, durations and intensity to provide the maximum stimulus for our clientele. I attended Licoln Jr High, Naperville Central High School and have two degrees from Northern Illinois University. Today I am still living in Naperville with my wife and three children. My ties to Naperville run deep as my parents, three brothers, brother and sister-in-laws and many of my friends also live in Naperville.

Many years ago I was competitive in gymnastics, wrestling and diving. I spent many years after college trying to find ways to maintain my competitiveness. I joined soccer leagues, did a couple of triathlons. Nothing really stuck. I was looking for ways to maintain my fitness that was not a complete chore. After a while, life got in the way. I got married had kids, worked all day. The last thing I wanted to do was work out. But I kept trying to get back into it. I hit my thirties and the metabolism dropped and I began gaining weight. So back to the gym...Again. I did the typical run on the treadmill or jog and body building style isolation exercises. I was getting stronger and had great cardio, or so I thought. Then I found CrossFit. I didn't understand the scaling aspect and jumped in head first. I couldn't even finish my first workout. I began doing as much research as I possibly could into this fitness program. With encouragement from CrossFit Headquarters and others with the CrossFit community, I became certified as a CrossFit Trainer. I opened CrossFit of Naperville in December of 2008. I am looking at turning forty soon and I'm in the best shape of my life. With CrossFit it has been fun, no longer a chore.

My goal here is to assist you in meeting your fitness goal. I believe that CrossFit is the quickest way to get truly FIT. I look forward to delivering a fun and exciting atmosphere for you to discover new levels of fitness and achieve goals you never thought possible!

Luke Summers - Trainer

Growing up I was always involved in youth sports. I went to high school at Naperville Central, and I committed most of my time there to football and also competed in gymnastics for a year. As many of you who participated in High School sports can attest to, a huge focus on strength conditioning became part of my life. I graduated from NCHS in 2001, and attended North Central College in Naperville where I remained active, and continued strength conditioning. I graduated NCC in 2005, and just like 95% of the people out there who are “staying fit” I continued my conditioning exactly how I was introduced to it. My work outs consisted of 2 hour “back and bi” days, “chest and tri” days, and all other sorts of combinations that included back/chest/bi/tri/legs/abs/cardio all segmented into their own special “day” that I thought they deserved.

Fast forward 4 redundant years of basically the same three week cycle that I would fall in and out of because workouts became repetitive and boring. I decided to run a triathlon. This required me to focus my training on endurance in swimming, running, and biking, and ditch the super sets of 315lb bench press. It was a nice change of pace, and after the triathlon I felt like I was in the best shape of my life. That’s when I was introduced to CrossFit by a friend at work and decided to take it head on. After my first workout I realized that I WASN’T in the best shape of my life, and that this was just the beginning.

Fast forward (again) through 4 months of CF workouts 1 – 3 times a week, to joining CrossFit of Naperville in January 2009. I started working out 4 -5 days a week with Neil, weighing in at 225lbs of “good weight” of course, and feeling fit. The days have gone by and I dropped about 30lbs and I am stronger, quicker, more flexible, and have better wind than I ever have before. I would not be where I am today physically and mentally if I had I continued on with my original workouts.

I’ve become part of a community and workout that I truly believe in and I look forward to “enjoying” every single day, and my goal is to help you experience what I went through. I want to expose you to your true potential, and help you break out of your rut and not only achieve but exceed any fitness goals you have set out for yourself.
